Senior Care: Dentures

Dentures, also colloquially known as false teeth, dental plate, gnashers and chopper falsies, are removable prosthetic devices that replace the missing teeth of a person. The different denture designs are generally supported by the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavities. There are some dental implants that bond or clasp onto the teeth. The use of dentures can benefit a person in many ways. Dentures can improve the chewing ability, replace the collapse of the lip and the cheeks after loss of teeth by supporting them, improve self esteem and help people to improve their speech clarity.

Dentures can be classified into two types and they are removable partial dentures and complete dentures. The removable partial dentures are given to those people who have some of their teeth missing on a particular arch. Fixed partial dentures are generally made from crowns that are fitted to the missing teeth. They are also popularly known as crown and bridge. The fixed bridges are more stable however they are more expensive. The complete dentures are the full dentures that are worn by people who have all the teeth missing from both the upper and the lower arch.

A dentist designs custom made dentures by taking impressions from a person’s mouth. The dentist generally decides upon the right type of dentures that are needed by a person. The dentist may suggest a conventional full denture once the teeth is removed from the mouth and after the tissues have healed. The healing process may take time and as a result a person may have to be without teeth for some time.

An immediate full denture is recommended straight after the removal of teeth. They do have the benefit of making a person not go without teeth but they need to be relined on a regular basis. In the case of partial dentures the denture rests on the metal framework that is attached to the natural teeth for support.

Dentures should be cared for and looked after by the person and the following are some guidelines that a person can follow for taking care of dentures:

 Dentures should be handled carefully because they may break if they are dropped. Standing over a folded towel or a basin of water id advised when a person needs to handle them.
 Dentures should not be allowed to dry out. They should be kept in plain water or a solution of denture soaking cleanser when not in use. They should never be placed in hot water as the water causes them to go out of shape.
 A person should brush the dentures daily to get rid of food particles and plague. Brushing them regularly also prevents them for getting stained and hence protects them for discolor. A person can use a ultrasonic cleaner to clean dentures but that does not replace the advantages of the regular brushing of dentures.
 The brushing of gums, tongue and palate every morning with a soft bristled brush helps in the circulation of tissues and the removal of plague.
 If dentures break, chip or crack a person should not make any attempts to fix them himself or herself. A dentist should be consulted as handling of dentures by inexperienced hands may cause damage beyond repair to the person.

  2. Complete dentures are used when few original teeth remain. The dentist begins by removing any remaining teeth so the dentures can be fitted. He or she then makes a mold of the gums and sends it to a dental lab where customized dentures are constructed. Partial dentures are prepared in much the same way as a complete set and are utilized when only a few teeth are missing.

  3. You have posted a complete suggestion of the dentures. The complete dentures are costly. Partial dentures are used if you have some normal teeth remaining. Working as a dentist in pueblo Colorado, I have seen many full or partial dentures. Anyway, thanks for the post indeed.

  7. This reminds me, I should probably wear my dentures a little less often. The cold of winter sometimes make them a little sticky, and not very pleasant to wear.

  15. My mother is planning on getting dentures after she talked with her dentist about the pros and cons of dentures and veneers. She ended up decided on dentures when she saw that dentures can be easily taken care of if you are careful. She doesn't want to go through the full surgical procedure of getting veneers either.

  16. Thanks for the information. My dad's looking into dentures right now and I'm a little worried about them. My dad's pretty forgetful, and there are a lot of little things to remember when it comes to dentures. I just don't want him to damage them at all.

  17. I think my grandpa is actually working on getting some dentures in the next couple weeks. He's been missing a good number of teeth for years, and I think he finally decided that he wanted a full set again. It should be really cool to see him start smiling more, instead of trying to hide it constantly.

  19. My grandmother has had dentures for about 3 years, but my grandfather recently got some from the dentist, and it has been a hoot watching them talk about their dentures. My grandma has been giving him tips and tricks for cleaning and eating with them, and my grandfather just moans through the entire conversation. I'm glad he finally got them though. He's been able to eat a lot more than he did before he had them.

  26. My grandmother has been needing dentures for a few years now and she has finally decided to get them. We made an appointment and she seemed sort of excited to go when we picked her up. I think that she has been struggling to chew her food and that is what made her decide to get dentures. I hope that her new dentures will let her enjoy eating again and that she will be able to enjoy food again.

  27. I agree that dentures can be a really helpful thing, especially for seniors. My grandfather has been thinking about getting dentures and I think it would be a really good idea. He has always been self conscience about his smile and this would help with that and many other things. 28. I'm taking my Grandma to get dentures this week and was worried about her being able to take care of them, but it looks like it's not as complicated as I thought. I remember in the movies people would always put dentures in a glass next to their bed over night, is there a solution in the glass that helps clean the dentures or is it just water? I know my Grandma is self-conscious and wants to take the best possible care of her dentures.

  29. I didn't realize that removable dentures were an option. I don't think they will work in my case. I am missing several teeth, and I suspect that I will need a full set. I am going to the dentist after the holidays, so I will find out then. I am not opposed to pulling my remaining teeth. They aren't doing much good.

I think that she should just get a whole new set of dentures because the probably make much better, more comfortable dentures. 34. It seems like wearing dentures would take a lot of getting used to. However, they would be a great way to be able to get your smile back. It is amazing to me how well dentists are able to shape dentures to your mouth. That would definitely take a lot of practice to be able to do.

  35. My grandmother has been having issues with her teeth and she asked to go see a dentist. I think that she is going to need to get a few implants or go with dentures. I think that dentures are going to be the easiest thing for her. I think that she will like the price and convenience of dentures. I am pretty sure that they also have made the denture process much better than it used to be.

  38. It was interesting to read about the different types of dentures and their uses. The only person I know who has dentures is my grandmother and for some reason I’ve been under the wrong assumption that it was only old people who used dentures. When my dentist told me I was going to need dentures I was quite surprised. Now I see how wrong I have been about my understanding of dentures. Dentures
